Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate a small artery, vein and nerve. These three structures combine to form a neuro-vascular bundle. A very small, very fine needle (much thinner than a sewing needle!) is gently inserted into the skin. This causes a release of chemicals into the bloodstream. These chemicals then affect the way an organ functions, the way the brain perceives pain, or blood flow
to an area of the body. By choosing the right points, a veterinary acupuncturist can help improve blood flow to a pet’s failing organs or inhibit the sensation of pain a pet may experience from arthritis. Although it is not a miracle cure for our pets, it is a nice complement to the wonderful advances of Western medicine.![]()
Veterinary Acupuncture is a relaxing, enjoyable experience for your pet. You should follow the same routine with your pet as you always follow for any day. There is no need for anesthesia for the treatments or for you to fast your pet. The first appointment will last 1 hour. After that, follow-ups are only 30 minutes. Surprisingly, most veterinary patients enjoy the treatments and require little distraction from having the needles placed. If anything, bringing your pet’s favorite treats is all you need!
