Since 2004, Christina Fuoco, VMD has incorporated acupuncture into her practice of veterinary medicine. Acupuncture has become a useful asset in managing pain for arthritic patients, post-surgical patients, as well as to help manage medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease and other disease processes.
In 2004, she received her certification at Tufts University through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society which, as their mission statement says, "is a worldwide advocate in the promotion of education, responsible research, and the integration of acupuncture into veterinary medicine to create and maintain optimal health in all animals." This group has been promoting acupuncture and teaching veterinarians Traditional Chinese Medicine since the 1970s. Because they are an international group, their worldwide membership brings diversity and a depth of knowledge many veterinary groups are not able to offer.
After graduating cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Fuoco went on to receive her Veterinary Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. After working in private practice for 9 years, Dr. Fuoco, along with Chad Carnahan, has opened the first veterinary rehab practice in Philadelphia. WAG: Whole Animal Gym (www.wag-philly.com) offers the benefits of an underwater treadmill, LASER therapy as well as acupuncture. In addition, Dr. Fuoco is the acupuncturist at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
